Foracort Rotacaps 200 is a prescription inhalation medicine made by Cipla Ltd. It combines two active ingredients — budesonide (200 micrograms) and formoterol (6 micrograms) — in a single rotacap that you use with a Rotahaler device. This medicine is designed for maintenance treatment of certain lung diseases, not for immediate relief during sudden breathing trouble.
How it works:
- Budesonide is a corticosteroid. It reduces inflammation and swelling inside the airways, which helps prevent them from narrowing and producing excessive mucus.
- Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator (LABA). It relaxes the smooth muscles around your airways, allowing them to stay open longer, so air moves more easily in and out of your lungs.
Using these two together helps control and improve breathing over time in conditions where the airways are chronically inflamed and constricted.
What it’s used for:
- Asthma: Helps reduce symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath when used regularly.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Helps ease breathing difficulties and maintains better airflow for people with chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
This medicine is intended for regular use every day as prescribed by your doctor. It helps manage symptoms and reduces flare-ups, but it does not work as a rescue medication for sudden asthma attacks or acute breathlessness — a fast-acting “rescue inhaler” is needed for that.
How to take it:
Foracort Rotacaps are inhaled through a Rotahaler device. You must place the capsule in the device and inhale the powder deeply into your lungs. You should not swallow the capsule. After inhaling, it’s recommended to rinse your mouth with water to reduce the chance of fungal infections in the mouth and throat.
Possible side effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Headache, nausea, vomiting
- Sore throat, cough, hoarseness of voice
- Fungal infection in the mouth (oral thrush)
- Tremors or increased heart rate
Many of these side effects are mild and may improve as your body adjusts, but report persistent or worsening symptoms to your doctor.
Warnings and precautions:
- Do not use if you are allergic to budesonide or formoterol.
- Inform your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver problems, seizures, or low potassium levels.
- Not recommended for children under a certain age unless your doctor decides it’s appropriate.
- Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if your doctor advises it.
Storage:
Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
