Seroflo 500 Rotacaps are inhalation capsules designed to be used with a Rotahaler device (a type of dry-powder inhaler) to deliver medicine directly into the lungs. Each rotacap contains a fixed combination of two active medicines:
- Fluticasone propionate (500 micrograms) — a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and swelling in the airways.
- Salmeterol (50 micrograms) — a long-acting bronchodilator (LABA) that relaxes the muscles around the air passages so they stay open and allow air to move more freely.
This combination helps people with chronic breathing conditions to breathe easier and maintain better lung function over time.
How It Works
When you inhale the powder from a Seroflo 500 Rotacap using a Rotahaler:
- Fluticasone works by decreasing inflammation and irritation in the airway walls. This lowers swelling, redness, and mucus production, which helps reduce persistent cough and airway narrowing.
- Salmeterol relaxes the smooth muscles around the bronchial tubes, widening the airways and making it easier to inhale and exhale.
Together, these actions help control symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing, and reduce the frequency of symptom flare-ups.
What It Is Used For
Seroflo 500 Rotacaps are prescribed for the long-term management of chronic airway diseases, including:
- Asthma: to help control and prevent breathing difficulties, wheezing, and coughing over time.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): including conditions like chronic bronchitis and emphysema, to support ongoing breathing ease and quality of life.
This medicine should be used regularly as directed by a doctor, even if symptoms improve, because stopping early may lead to worsening of the condition.
How to Use Seroflo 500 Rotacaps
- Do not swallow the capsule. Rotacaps are for inhalation only.
- Place one rotacap into the chamber of the Rotahaler device, not in your mouth.
- Prepare the device as instructed so the capsule is pierced.
- Exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece between your lips and inhale deeply so the medicine is drawn into your lungs.
- Hold your breath for a few seconds to allow the medicine to deposit in the airways, then breathe out slowly.
- If some powder remains in the device, repeat the inhalation until the dose is complete.
- After inhalation, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to help reduce the risk of fungal (yeast) infections in the mouth and throat.
This medicine is not for sudden asthma attacks; a fast-acting “rescue” inhaler should be used instead for acute symptoms.
Common Side Effects
While many people tolerate Seroflo 500 Rotacaps well, some side effects can occur. These may include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Sore throat, cough, or hoarseness of voice
- Respiratory tract infections
- Fungal infections in the mouth (oral thrush)
- Increased heart rate or palpitations
- Muscle, bone, or joint pain
Most side effects are mild and tend to improve with continued use, but talk to your doctor if they persist or worsen.
Precautions and Warnings
Before using Seroflo 500 Rotacaps:
- Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma or cataracts, liver or kidney problems, or a history of infections.
- This medicine may lower blood potassium levels (hypokalemia) and should be used cautiously in people prone to this condition.
- Do not use it during active chest infections or tuberculosis without medical advice because corticosteroids can mask or worsen infections.
- Discuss use during pregnancy or breastfeeding with your doctor to weigh benefits against potential risks.
- Do not stop the medicine abruptly, even if you feel better; follow your doctor’s instructions.
Storage
Store the rotacaps in a cool, dry place away from direct heat or sunlight and keep them out of reach of children.
